Two-Kiwi Smoothie Easy · 5 min · Forgiving · 1 batch the trial dose of kiwifruit, blended cold with yogurt, cucumber, ginger and mint Two green kiwifruit a day is the dose that moved the needle in three constipation trials, and the whole fruit went in, seeds and all. This blend is built around that number and around what the FODMAP tables allow: kiwifruit and cucumber are low, the yogurt's lactose is partly digested by its own cultures, and there is no banana, honey or mango because ripe banana and honey sit on the high side of the same tables. Ginger goes in for its measured effect on the stomach, mint for the cool, and neither is claimed to do more than the trials showed. No sweetener. If it needs one, a teaspoon of maple syrup, which the tables rate low, rather than honey, which they do not. It is tart, green and cold, and it is a breakfast, not a treatment. INGREDIENTS - 150 g green kiwifruit (2 green kiwifruit, peeled; frozen if you like it thick)
- 100 g cucumber (about a third of one, skin on)
- 100 g plain yogurt (plain; lactose-free if lactose troubles you)
- 5 g fresh ginger (fresh, peeled; a thin thumb-tip)
- 3 g fresh mint (4 or 5 fresh leaves)
- 60 ml filtered water (cold, or ice)
Method - Peel. Trim the ends off the kiwifruit and peel them; leave the cucumber skin on.
- Blend. Kiwifruit, cucumber, yogurt, ginger, mint and the cold water into the blender, and run it until the seeds are flecks.
- Adjust. More water if it is too thick, a second thumb-tip of ginger if you want heat, and a teaspoon of maple syrup only if the fruit is sour.
- Serve. Pour and drink it straight away, cold.

- fructose (C₆H₁₂O₆) · the fruit's own sugar
- gingerol (C₁₇H₂₆O₄) · the heat, and a measured effect

Possible side effects - Two kiwifruit a day is the dose that moved bowel frequency in the constipation trials; if you already run loose, halve it. Kiwifruit is a common food allergen: if your mouth itches at the first sip, stop.
- Plain yogurt carries about 5 g of lactose per 100 g, under the 12 g most lactose-intolerant adults tolerate at once. If that is still too much, lactose-free yogurt blends the same.
